What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information, which your computer or mobile device downloads when you visit a website. When you return to websites – or visit other websites that use the same cookies – they recognise these cookies and therefore your browsing device. Cookies serve a lot of different purposes, like helping us understand how our website is being used, improving your browsing experience, letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering preferences, and generally tailoring the services we offer.

Why do we use cookies?

We use cookies to

  • help our websites work
  • improve the efficiency of our website
  • provide effective security when you are buying our products
  • help us to arrange content to match your preferred interests more quickly
  • learn from our website visitors and give the best customer experience we possibly can
  • track the effectiveness of our online marketing activity
  • collect statistical information to assist us and our partners to learn how customers use applicable products or services

Benefits to you

  • security
  • the ability to view pages that are more relevant to you
  • overall efficiency of the website such as speed up your searches
  • you are not asked repeatedly the same questions; for example to complete a survey
  • you are presented with advertising that is relevant to your particular need(s).

What cookies do we use?

The types of cookies we use can generally be put into four (4) categories, based on the International Chamber of Commerce guide to cookie categories; strictly necessary, performance, functionality and targeting.

The table below explains the cookies we use and why.

Cookies we use

Strictly necessary

These cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the website.

'Session ID' cookie to maintain a user's session and allow data to be passed between different online forms, this cookie exists only for the duration of the user's session

Performance cookies

These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website, for instance which pages visitors go to most often, and if they get error messages from web pages. These cookies don’t collect information that identifies a visitor. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. It is only used to improve how a website works or the effectiveness of a marketing campaign.

Analytics cookies are used for website analysis to monitor and optimise the website. Cookies capture anonymous data about a user's journey and aggregate this data to analyse trends. These cookies last longer than the user's session so that we can understand whether a user is visiting us a first time or is a returning visitor.

Ad tracking cookies measure the effectiveness of our online marketing campaigns.

Social Media cookies allow our customers the facility to link content on the website with a user's chosen social media platform. In order for this facility to operate we use these platform's cookies, which exist only for the duration of a user's session.

Functionality cookies

These cookies make the website efficient and allow the website to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. For instance, a website may be able to provide you with local weather reports or traffic news by storing in a cookie the region in which you are currently located. These cookies can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts and other parts of web pages that you can customise. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for such as watching a video or commenting on a blog. The information these cookies collect is anonymous and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.

Google maps cookie which forms part of our Traffic & Travel map functionality. This cookie allows Google maps to remember which browser you are using and what preferences you have set when you view maps.

Targeting cookies

These cookies record your visit to our website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. They are linked to services provided by third parties, such as “Like” and “Share” buttons. The third party provides these services in return for recognising that you have visited our website.

How can I manage cookies?

Most web browsers allow some control of most cookies through the browser settings or opting-out directly with the party that operates or controls the cookie.  You can instruct your browser to indicate when a cookie is being sent or even refuse all cookies but doing so may affect your ability to use some portions of our site.
