Autumn Is Prime Time For Bike Thieves

Date: 10 October 2017

According to TRACKER’s annual stolen motorbike recovery figures, nearly a third of all bikes it recovered in 2016 were stolen in the autumn months. As the main biking season enters its final few weeks and nights start drawing in, TRACKER advises bikers to be extra vigilant with their security.
Andy Barrs, Head of Police Liaison at TRACKER says, “Our figures show that autumn sees the highest increase in the number of bikes stolen and recovered closely followed by the winter months. Over £687,000 worth of scooters and motorcycles were recovered in 2016, an increase of 9.2% from the previous year.
“West Midlands Police has just introduced a campaign called 'lock it or lose it' encouraging bikers to use physical locks and chains to secure their bikes when parking in the city's theft hotspots. We would also advocate other security measures and advise bikers to follow some simple security measures especially when storing your bike over the winter period.”
  • Fit a tracking device to ensure recovery if the bike is stolen.
  • Always put the steering lock and chains on.
  • Keep your keys with you at all times and keep them safe at home.
  • If you have a garage, use it to store your bike.
  • Make sure your garage is fitted with strong locks.
  • Mark the main areas of the motorcycle with your registration number or postcode.
  • Purchase a good immobiliser.
  • Do not advertise your motorcycle to the world by leaving it on the drive. If you do not have a garage, cover it or park it in the back garden.
  • When you park your bike in a public place, cover it and park in a well-lit area.
TRACKER stolen motorcycle recovery systems work like an electronic homing device. A covert transmitter is hidden in one of several places around the motorcycle. TRACKER offers the ultimate in protection as it detects when the bike is being moved without the ignition being turned on. The tracking device works even if the motorcycle is hidden in a container or transported on back of a van. TRACKER is the only vehicle tracking system operated by all police forces in the UK, offering bike owners the ultimate in security.
