A Mercedes 300SL 'Gulliwing', which used to belong to Formula One legend Sir Stirling Moss, is expected to sell for over £1 million at auction.
According to express.co.uk, the Mercedes is most well known for the role it had in Moss's most famous race. He used the car with his navigator, journalist Denis Jenkinson, on a course reconnaissance before the Mille Miglia race, which took place in Italy in 1955.
The two went on to win the 1,000-mile race using a Mercedes 300SLR. Juan Fangio, who came in second place, also happened to be driving a 300SLR, so it's no wonder it's known as one of history's greatest race cars. Moss's victory became so well-known because he finished the race in record time. He was almost half an hour quicker than Fangio's finishing time and averaged 97mph throughout.
Bonhams will be auctioning the car in Stuttgart, Germany, which has been fully restored to its original 1954-55 specification. Interested bidders from around the world will be heading to the Mercedes-Benz museum on July 12, reports westernmorningnews.co.uk.
James Knight, Bonhams group motoring director, comments on the famous vehicle.
"This is arguably the most historic 300SL Gulliwing extant and is the latest consignment to the auction at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart," he says.
