TRACKER Recovers Over Half Million Pounds Worth Of Stolen Caravans In The First Six Months 2017

Date: 25 July 2017

With the number of caravans thefts increasing by 52% within a year*, TRACKER, stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) expert, is urging owners to ramp up their security this summer. In June alone TRACKER recovered eight stolen caravans worth a total of £75,000. The most recent recovery was a Swift Eccles Sport 2015 stolen from Weston-Super-Mare. In less than 24 hours it was recovered undamaged in Walsall 110 miles away. Police made one arrest and recovered another stolen vehicle.
So far this year, in total over a half million pounds worth of caravans have been recovered by TRACKER, with Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Staffordshire currently hot spots for caravan and motorhome thefts.  With the Caravan and Motorhome Club predicting that touring trips among UK holidaymakers will rise to over 16.6 million** and sales of caravans and motorhomes also set to rise by 18% by 2030, security should be a major priority for owners.
Andy Barrs, Head of Police Liaison at TRACKER, comments, “The latest figures show that touring holidays in a caravan or motorhome are all the rage and look set to become even more popular. However, criminal gangs see these caravans as valuable commodities to sell on, so owners need to be vigilant.
“We’ve made 29 recoveries already this year, underlining the value of TRACKER’s SVR technology in increasing the chances of police recovering a stolen caravan. Having a tracking unit fitted in a caravan or motorhome could be the difference between a vehicle being found and returned or taken by organised criminals and never seen again.”
Unlike other devices, TRACKER’s unique technology can locate stolen vehicles anywhere, even when they are hidden in a garage or shipping container. Working with all UK police forces, TRACKER’s revolutionary VHF technology system works like an electronic homing device, a covert transmitter is hidden in one of several dozen places around the vehicle. There is no visible aerial, so the thief won’t even know it’s there.
  • Choose a storage site with good security rather than just a good price
  • Fit security posts or a substantial gate if parking the caravan on the drive
  • Security mark the caravan if it is not already done.
  • Mark valuables and interior fitments inside the caravan with your postcode using an etching tool or engraver.
  • Fit physical deterrents such as hitch locks, wheel clamps and deadlocks on doors to make it difficult for thieves.
  • Remove all valuables from the caravan.
  • Do not leave registration documents in the caravan as they can help thieves sell it on.
  • Always close and lock doors and windows when you leave your caravan, even if it’s just for a short time.
  • Fit a time switch if you’re out after dark, as lights on will make it look occupied and deter opportunist thieves.
  • Get to know your neighbours on the caravan site and look out for each other’s vehicles.
  • Don’t be afraid to report suspicious activity.
  • Fit a TRACKER device to increase the chance of recovery in the event of theft
