TRACKER helps Met police recover stolen Renault Scenic in under 9 hours
Date: 14 November 2016
Mr Petrie was about to leave the house to pick up his wife, when he realised both his keys and his Renault Scenic were gone. Fortunately the car, worth £8,000, was fitted with TRACKER’s (part of the Tantalum Corporation) stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) technology, which led Metropolitan Police straight to its location. Car thefts in London are on the rise for the first time in 20 years*, so the capital’s car owners need to focus on security.
Opportunistic thieves move fast. Mr Petrie believes that he dropped his car keys outside his house and that’s when the thief sprang into action, making off with his vehicle. Once he discovered that his keys and vehicle were gone, he reported the theft to TRACKER. Officers from the Metropolitan Police followed the tracking signal, and found the stolen car parked up and in perfect condition.
“This case shows the value of tracking devices in closing the net on thieves and reuniting motorists with their stolen vehicles,” explains Andy Barrs, Head of Police Liaison at TRACKER. “Despite the effectiveness of this technology, too many people think a TRACKER is only for luxury car owners, but Mr Petrie’s Renault is typical of the type of car the majority of people own. In addition, there are a wide range of tracking products aimed at the everyday motorist, offering protection for caravans, motorbikes, classic cars, as well as the family car or low cost run-around.
“With car thefts up in London for the first time in 20 years, it makes more sense than ever to invest in tracking technology, as a way to stop thieves in their tracks and protect your vehicle.”
Whilst a TRACKER device won’t stop a car from being stolen, its unique technology will locate the vehicle anywhere, even if it is hidden in a garage or shipping container. TRACKER stolen vehicle recovery systems work like an electronic homing device. A covert transmitter is hidden in one of several dozen places around the vehicle. There is no visible aerial, so the thief won’t even know it’s there.
Commenting on the recovery, Mr Petrie said, “I’ve been protecting my car with a TRACKER device since 2012, but this is the first time I’ve had to call upon the service. Thankfully my vehicle was missing for less than half a day before the police found it, so it is a very worthwhile investment. It is hard to appreciate that something as simple as dropping your keys outside of your home could have such a dramatic impact, and without TRACKER the car would probably have been gone for good.”
