Stolen Ducati bike recovered in London within 16 hours
Date: 21 November 2016
Mr Kevin Paterson was shocked to discover that his much loved Ducati 999s, a superbike worth over £5,000, had been stolen from outside his place of work in London. Fortunately, his motorbike was fitted with one of TRACKER’s market leading stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) units, which helped the police locate the vehicle within 16 hours of the theft. 79% of motorcycles recovered by TRACKER are stolen from London*, highlighting the need for the Capital’s biking community to focus on security.
The Ducati 999S, a classic bike that stopped being manufactured in 2006, was left outside Mr Paterson’s work, in Park Royal London, but when he came to ride it home that evening, it had gone. He called TRACKER and the police straight away and the tracking unit was activated. Police followed the signal directly to the stolen bike, and found it was undamaged, apart from a scratch to the paintwork.
Mr Paterson says, “It was such a shock to find my bike had been stolen; I honestly believed it was gone for good. I’ve been a TRACKER customer for 10 years, but this is the first time I’ve had to use the service; I was very impressed with how quickly the police and TRACKER located the bike.
“I was the second owner of the bike, however this specific make and model stopped production in 2006. If the bike had not been located then I would potentially never have been able to find another quite like it.”
Andy Barrs, Head of Police Liaison at TRACKER explains, “This particular Ducati is a real enthusiast’s bike, making it a highly sought after prize for thieves. Luckily, Mr Paterson had the foresight to protect it with a tracking device, helping police quickly find it and reunite it with its owner.”
“However, it’s important to note that it’s not always premium makes and models, which attract thieves from across the UK, not just London. Peugeot and Honda bikes are the most stolen and recovered makes so far this year, which should urge owners of popular, low cost models to protect their bikes from opportunistic thieves out to make a fast profit. Whilst our tracking devices won’t prevent a bike from being stolen, they will significantly increase the chances of police locating and retrieving it before thieves can ship it abroad or break it down for parts.”
Using patented VHF technology TRACKER’s SVR units can trace stolen motorcycles and scooters, even if they are hidden in containers, lock-ups or underground car parks. The high tech tracking technology is not stopped by GPS/GSM signal jammers and the signal can be picked up throughout the UK, as well as France, Spain, Poland, Holland, Luxembourg and Italy.
