Land Rover Defender thefts are a nationwide concern

Date: 18 July 2016

TRACKER (Part of the Tantalum Corporation), the leading stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) expert has assisted West Yorkshire, Sussex and Surrey Police in the recovery of two stolen Land Rover Defenders. The vehicles worth £10,000 and £15,000 were stolen at opposite ends of the country and come just weeks after NFU Mutual revealed that the thefts of Land Rover Defenders has increased by 75% in four years.
Darren Wray, the owner of one of the stolen Land Rover Defenders, based in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, was shocked to discover that his car was stolen from outside his place of work by an opportunistic thief. With the help of TRACKER, the car was located by West Yorkshire Police in Leeds.
“I had been servicing my car in the same way that I’ve done many times. I backed the car out of the garage and left it ticking over outside, for literally just a couple of minutes, when it was stolen,” said Darren Wray. “I felt helpless and couldn’t believe how quickly it had happened. After contacting the police and TRACKER, my Defender was located in just a few hours. Without a TRACKER fitted, I’m sure the outcome would have been completely different.”
The increase in Defender thefts is not isolated to West Yorkshire. Another vehicle was stolen from a home in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. It was found by Surrey Police in Tatsfield, Surrey, with the assistance of TRACKER.
Steve Houghton, Police Liaison Manager at TRACKER adds: “The thefts of Land Rover Defenders have been rising rapidly in recent years, but even more so since they went out of production in January. Criminal gangs will often target cars that are in high demand and unfortunately it looks like the Defender is now at the top of the hit list.”
“Fitting a device won’t stop your car being stolen, but it can drastically improve the chances of the police locating the car and returning it to its owner. TRACKER uses a combination of VHF, GPS and GSM technologies meaning vehicles can be located even if they are underground, in garages or in shipping containers. TRACKER provides a great level of protection to its customers as well as assisting the police on a daily basis in tackling vehicle theft head on.”
