Car theft highest in Scotland’s cultural and cosmopolitan hot spots

Date: 15 May 2017

According to the latest figures from TRACKER, the stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) specialist, Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, and cosmopolitan city, Glasgow, recorded the most stolen and recovered vehicles in 2016. The most expensive car stolen and recovered in Scotland by TRACKER was a Bentley Arnage, taken in central Glasgow and located in Bothwell, South Lanarkshire. But top of the thief’s shopping list in Scotland is the Range Rover, with the Sport and Vogue models among the most stolen.

The second most stolen make of car was BMW, with the M3 and M5 models frequently being taken in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. However, it’s not just Scotland’s city dwellers who need to watch out for vehicle thieves. Rural crime hot spots for quad bike thefts spike along the Scottish Borders and Perth & Kinross.

Plant thefts were a particular problem in Lanarkshire, with mini-diggers and towable generators being a big draws for thieves in the area. TRACKER’s figures also show that motorhomes and caravans are also targeted across Scotland, but those in storage during the winter months are particularly vulnerable.

Andy Barrs, Head of Police Liaison at TRACKER (part of the Tantalum Corporation) explains, “TRACKER enjoys a strong partnership with Police Scotland and in the past year it has invested around £20,000 equipping its patrol vehicles and helicopter with our revolutionary VHF tracking technology in the fight against vehicle crime.

“Our figures show that thieves don’t just target the city and they don’t always go for the expensive brands. The message is that all vehicle owners need to focus on security and TRACKER’s SVR technology can help. Whilst installing an SVR device won’t stop a vehicle being stolen, it does significantly increase the chances of police locating and recovering a vehicle that’s been taken by criminals. If you don’t want to lose it, track it.”

Unlike other devices, TRACKER’s unique technology can locate stolen vehicles anywhere, even when they are hidden in a garage or shipping container. TRACKER has been reuniting car lovers with their vehicles for over 23 years, and it’s this expertise which makes TRACKER the leader in stolen vehicle recovery. TRACKER stolen vehicle recovery systems work like an electronic homing device. A covert transmitter is hidden in one of several dozen places around the vehicle. There is no visible aerial, so the thief won’t even know it’s there.
