Maserati has unveiled a brand new sportscar which it hopes will be a cogent threat to the Porsche 911.
The Alfieri, which was previously revealed as a concept car, will be put into production with a view to releasing it some time in 2016.
As suggested in the Geneva Motor Show when it was first shown off, the car will come in both rear and four-wheel drive versions. Buyers will also be given the option of choosing between a coupé and convertible iteration.
The flagship Alfieri will be an all-wheel drive V6 capable of achieving 520bhp. Less costly versions will also be made available with around 100 less bhp, although prices will still be at the £70,000 mark even at the entry level.
If even this is a little low key, maybe the revived GranTurismo will be more appealing, although buyers will have to wait until 2018 for that release. This high-end, rear-engine sports car will feature a V8 engine capable of providing more than 560hp..
At the lower end of the spectrum, meanwhile, Maserati has announced a new Ghibli and Quattroporte, which will offer around half the power of the Alfieri.
All of the above have been announced to work with Maserati's goal of increasing worldwide sales to 75,000 by 2018. Given that only 15,400 units were shifted in 2013, a number of head turning new vehicles was almost certain to be on the cards.
