Synonymous with the heady days of summer and harking back to the freedom of life in the 60s, it’s easy to see why owning a VW campervan is a dream for many. It’s a vehicle often referred to more as a lifestyle rather than a form of transportation.
Buying one is not something done on a whim, but thought through and considered by enthusiasts who want to invest in something they will have for a long time. If that’s you and you’re looking to capture the essence of summer, here’s our top tips on buying and protecting your VW campervan.

Buying a VW campervan

There are varying models of VW campervan so make sure you do your research to find out which one is ideal for you. The most iconic are any based on the classic Transporter model first seen in the 1960s. As a vehicle widely considered a classic, expect a price tag to match, although it is possible to find a bargain.

When you find a model you like the look of, a viewing is really crucial. Ideally, you should take a mechanic, classic car restorer or a VW expert with you so that they can give you a specialist appraisal on the spot. You’ll want to look for things like rust, particularly around some of the key areas of the van, including the two chassis rails running from the front to the rear of the car, the two jacking points and the outriggers which run from left to right. Identifying some rust isn’t necessarily a red flag to purchase but you’ll need to investigate how much it will be to fix.

Inside the van you’ll want to look at the general standard of the interior, as this will give you a good idea as to how the campervan has been looked after. In particular, take a look under the sink for signs of rot.

Protecting the value of your VW campervan

Like any classic car investment, it’s vital to maintain the standard of your VW campervan to ensure a good resale value in the future. Be ready to commit to regular proactive maintenance and repairs.

Also, if you will mainly be using your VW campervan in the summer months be sure not to leave it to sit on your driveway through the whole of winter without a run-around. Regular use is important to keeping everything in good working order.

VW campervan security

As the popularity of VW campervans has grown, unfortunately so too has the risk of theft. Having a vehicle of value means that as well as paying for the continuing maintenance of your vehicle, you also need to invest in security as well.

One of the best ways to protect your campervan is by using a TRACKER device. Our VW campervan tracking device is a small, discreet box which is designed to be hidden from view to ensure that would-be car thieves do not see it and attempt to remove it. It also means that it won’t ruin the aesthetic of your campervan, which can be a concern for many people.

In the event that your VW campervan is stolen, once you call us, we’ll alert the TRACKER system which will hone in on the VHF and GPS signals produced by the device to identify its location. Using both signals means that if thieves attempts to use a GPS signal jammer, we will still have a strong signal coming from the VHF. What’s more, the VHF signal can also get through concrete buildings and steel doors so if an attempt is made to hide the vehicle, our TRACKER systems will still find it.

The great news is that having a VW campervan tracking device on your van is really popular with insurance companies too, who will likely offer you a discount on your premium as a result.

If you have a VW campervan, or are considering getting one soon, protecting it as best as you can is essential. To find out more about TRACKER, give us a call today to find out more.
