Crime - Let's Bring it Down

'BE KEY AWARE' - this is the message being communicated in a new initiative by TRACKER who are working in partnership with the Home Office encouraging motorists to take more care of their car keys, to avoid them and consequently their cars from being stolen.

"Vehicle crime has fallen by 34 per cent since 1997, according to the authoritative British Crime Survey. As new vehicles become harder to break into, criminals are resorting to new methods for stealing cars. In some cases, this means stealing the keys either during a burglary or while they are left unattended.

"Everyone has a part to play in reducing vehicle crime even further. This new initiative from TRACKER sends the message to motorists that they must keep their keys safe and secure at all times. This initiative is an excellent example of how Government can work in partnership with business and motorists themselves to bring down crime."
Hazel Blears, Home Office Minister for Crime Reduction

12% of vehicles stolen were taken using the owner's keys - an increase of nearly 50% in the last four years

On average, 41% of all TRACKER fitted stolen vehicles that are recovered are taken with the owner's keys

On average, £1.2 million worth of vehicles retrieved by TRACKER every month are where the vehicle has been stolen using keys

Figures quoted from 2001-02 British Crime Survey & TRACKER Network (UK) Ltd

These figures indicate this problem is on the rise; with vehicle security becoming ever more comprehensive, thieves are having to resort to other methods to steal cars, including taking keys. The Home Office is keen to alert motorists to this increasing problem and TRACKER has announced this initiative to help get the message across.

The Home Office has issued the following advice to motorists:

  • When you leave your car, always remove the ignition key and lock all doors. Do this all the time, even when filling up with petrol or just popping into the shop. On icy mornings, never leave your car unattended with the engine running to warm it up or defrost the windows.
  • Always keep your keys in a safe place, which is out of sight and away from windows and doors when you are not using your car.
